SOMA Shuttle Initiative
To create a shared, accessible shuttle system that links both towns, enhancing mobility for residents of all ages
Extend service offerings beyond just commuter transit
A loop-based shuttle system akin to a jitney
Link important destinations in both towns
A dependable and consistent schedule
Alleviate traffic congestion and reduce reliance on cars
Enhance accessibility to employment, businesses, services, and recreation
Foster independence for teens and seniors
Meetings in June 2026 and this summer to progress as a collaborative initiative between South Orange and Maplewood
Fall 2026: Conduct a community survey to confirm routes, schedules, and demand
Investigate a pilot model utilizing existing vehicles or partnering with a vendor
Seek NJTPA grant funding, supported by a shared local contribution
Plan for long-term sustainability through fares, partnerships, and phased funding
A group of Maplewood & South Orange neighbors encouraging the towns to apply for a joint grant for a shared shuttle service.
